The Beginning Runner's Handbook : The Proven 13-week Walk/Run Program

Description

More than 20.5 million Americans run recreationally, according to the latest U.S. statisticsan astonishing figure that underscores just how popular running is as a method of improving fitness. This tightly written, absolutely basic guide exclusively for the beginning runner offers a proven and tested program perfectly suited to those seeking long-term fitness. At the core of the book is "the program"the specific 13-week walk/run plan designed to turn people into runners, without injury. Everyonewalkers, first-time joggers, even those who want to advance another stepwill find a training program to suit their interests, needs and current level of fitness. For this new edition, much has been added, including all-new material on running faster and farther; fartlek, interval and tempo training; how to maintain fitness while vacationing, and a post-13-weeks maintenance program. Another new chapter focuses on building toward half and full marathons. As well, there s a new chapter on running and the family, including running during pregnancy and after the baby arrives, jogging strollers, children who want to run and running with the family dog. Other new sections examine coming back from injuries, as well as the latest on nutrition and running, such as low-carb diets and running. "

- Concise, detailed and easy-to-understand instructions on how to hold a knife, the basic cuts and the proper techniques for cutting poultry, fish and specific vegetables and fruits, and creative garnishes. - Coverage of Japanese-style knives and cutting techniques. - Concise history of knives and knife-making. The Complete Book of Knife Skills was created in collaboration with Zwilling J.A. Henckels, one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-quality knives. This indispensable reference will allow home cooks to teach themselves knife skills based on professional instructors' years of experience.   This short, readable book is a sharply argued manifesto for those environmentalists who reject schemes The Beginning Runner's Handbook : The Proven 13-week Walk/Run Program free download pdf of "green capitalism" or piecemeal reform. Environmental and economic scholars Magdoff and Foster contend that the struggle to reverse ecological degradation requires a firm grasp of economic reality. Going further, they argue that efforts to reform capitalism along environmental lines or rely solely on new technology to avert catastrophe misses the point. The main cause of the looming environmental disaster is the driving logic of the system itself, and those in power--no matter how "green"--are incapable of making the changes that are necessary.

Shukui Liu: Numerical Simulation of Large Amplitude Ship Motions

Numerical Simulation of Large Amplitude Ship Motions

Description

The reliable prediction of the seakeeping behavior of ships in real seas is a demanding task for naval architects and of great interest to ship owners/operators, as it affects both the design and operation of ships. In this work, a set of methods, namely, a time domain transient Green function solver, alternatively a time domain hybrid solver for zero speed problems and the adopted hybrid solver for nonzero forward speed problem, are developed to study the seakeeping behavior of ships and floating structures in waves. Validation cases cover both simple mathematical geometries and practical ship hulls, either without or with forward speed. Obtained results include radiation/diffraction forces, wave making resistance, motion simulation and added resistance (drift force). It is proved that by properly selecting a solver the developed package is capable of simulating large amplitude motions of ships or floating structures in waves thus it can serve as an advanced tool for the assessment of ship design and operation. This work is expected to offer researchers in similar field a state of art review of the problem and certain amount of inspiration in terms of numerical implementation.

Amber, Furs and Cockleshells : Bike Rides with Pilgrims and Merchants

Description

Myriad wonderful characters populate the pages of Anne Mustoe's fascinating book as she pedals along three very different, but equally evocative, roads - the Amber Route from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the Santa Fe Trail from the Missouri River to New Mexico and the Pilgrims' Way of St James from Le Puy to Santiago de Compostela. Battling against ferocious winds in Jutland, blizzards in the Rockies, traffic jams of cyclists along the Danube and menus in Czech, Hungarian and Basque, Mustoe survives with her usual fortitude and wry humour, even when she is knocked off her bike by a short-sighted nonagenarian in a Fiat Panda.

"New York Times" bestselling author Marissa Meyer reveals the story behind her fascinating villain in "Fairest," an unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes a special full-color image of Levana's castle and an excerpt from "Winter," the exciting conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles." "As you look deeply into your own awareness, and relax the self-contraction, and dissolve into the empty ground of your own primordial experience, the simple feeling of Being right now, right here is it not obvious all at once? Were you not present from the start? Did you not have a hand to play in all that was to follow? Did not the dream itself begin when you got bored with being God? Was it not fun to get lost in the productions of your own wondrous imagination, Amber, Furs and Cockleshells : Bike Rides with Pilgrims and Merchants download ebook and pretend it all was other? Did you not write this book, and countless others like it, simply to remind you who you are?"

Eco-Aesthetics : Art, Literature and Architecture in a Period of Climate Change

Description

By moving beyond traditional aesthetic categories (beauty, the sublime, the religious), Eco-Aesthetics takes an inter-disciplinary approach bridging the arts, humanities and social sciences and explores what aesthetics might mean in the 21st century. It is one in a series of new, radical aesthetics promoting debate, confronting convention and formulating alternative ways of thinking about art practice. There is no doubt that the social and environmental spheres are interconnected but can art and artists really make a difference to the global environmental crisis? Can art practice meaningfully contribute to the development of sustainable lifestyles? Malcolm Miles explores the strands of eco-art, eco-aesthetics and contemporary aesthetic theories, offering timely critiques of consumerism and globalisation and, ultimately, offers a possible formulation of an engaged eco-aesthetic for the early 21st century.

As he did in "Drive "and "A Whole New Mind," Daniel H. Pink draws on a rich trove of social science for his counterintuitive insights. He reveals the new ABCs of moving others (it's no longer "Always Be Closing"), explains why extraverts don't make the best salespeople, and shows how giving people an "off-ramp" for their actions can matter more than actually changing their minds.

Global Warming and Other Bollocks: The Truth About All Those Science Scare Stories

Description

But despite the fact that they've been proved wrong, the pessimists are undeterred by their abysmal record. They continue to echo a deep-seated fear that unless we repent and change the way we live, we will be instrumental in destroying our own world. Today. industrialisation, genetically modified crops, scientific medicine, nuclear power and the car are held up as the harbingers of doom. Politicians and persuasive pressure groups play on this same basic fear. They scare us with tales of an inevitable global warming catastrophe blamed on CO2 emissions, they stoke the fires of terror that an epidemic of obesity will kill all our children and they sternly tell us that our indulgent lifestyle will consume the earth's precious resources. But will pesticides kill off life in our oceans, will chemicals in food poison us all and invisible rays from power cables and mobiles kill us with cancer? Stanley Feldman, a professor of anaestetics at London University appointed to the Imperial College School of Medicine looks at the evidence. An author of several books, including From Poison Arrows to Prozac, he is a respected lecturer and explainer of popular science. Vincent Marks is an editor of Panic Nation and an expert on diabetes. He is a former president of the Association of Clinical Biochemists and founder member of HealthWatch.

Besides McIlroy, Stockton has worked with champions such as Phil Mickelson, Yani Tseng (the number-one ranked woman in the world), and Annika Sorenstam. In "Unconscious Scoring," Stockton illustrates his principles with examples from his week-to-week sessions with these and many more of the game s top players. Including black-and-white and color photos and instructional video tags, "Unconscious Scoring" reveals the simple processes and transformative insights that every player whatever his or her handicap yearns to master." Born in 1963, in an era of bread shortages, Anya grew up in a communal Moscow apartment where eighteen families shared one kitchen. She sang odes to Lenin, black-marketeered Juicy Fruit gum at school, watched her father brew moonshine, and, like most Soviet citizens, longed for a taste of the mythical West. When Anya was ten, she and Larisa fled the political repression of Brezhnev-era Russia, arriving in Philadelphia with no winter coats and no right of return.

Every page is filled with beautiful and thoughtful celebrations of getting in the water, and what makes it so cherished, meditative, and energising: from watercolour portraits paired with personal stories of how swimming has affected real people's lives, to illustrated inspirational quotes, to collections of vintage ephemera and objects--colourful swim caps, bathing suits through the ages, traditional pool signs, and more--all interspersed with the inviting, clear blue waters of oceans, lakes, and swimming pools. A preface from record-breaking long-distance swimmer and bestselling author Lynne Cox offers an appreciation of Congdon's artwork from a swimmer's point of view. With an emphasis on swimming as a way of life--diving in, going with the flow--this beautiful volume will speak to serious swimmers, vacation paddlers, and anyone pondering the high dive.

83.   Cranial Nerves Teaching an infant or toddler to swim is not only a matter of safety, but also a great way to stimulate physical coordination, concentration, and intelligence all the while making your child happier, healthier, and more self-confident. A brilliantly funny novel from one of our most unconventional literary talents, Nicola Barker. Some people follow the stars. Some people follow the soaps. Some people follow rare birds, or obscure bands, or the form, or the football. Wesley prefers not to follow. He thinks that to follow anything too assiduously is a sign of weakness. Wesley is a prankster, a maverick, a charismatic manipulator, an accidental murderer who longs to live his life anonymously. But he The Joy of Swimming: A Celebration of Our Love for Getting in the Water free epub can't. It is his awful destiny to be hotly pursued - secretly stalked, obsessively hunted - by a disparate group of oddballs he calls The Behindlings. Their motivations? Love, boredom, hatred, revenge.

The Art of Tracey Emin

Description

The career of Tracey Emin, one of the best known contemporary British artists, has become a potent symbol of the relationship between art and celebrity in our time. When it was exhibited in London at the Tate in 1999, her now notorious installation My Bed was denounced by conservative critics as a national scandal, but this and her other work have continued to attract ever larger audiences. Whether storming drunkenly out of live television debates, talking tearfully about her abortions or modelling evening gowns for Vivienne Westwood, Tracey Emin makes headlines. Yet if Emin is now universally recognized as a media phenomenon, her work has also begun to attract serious critical attention. In The Art of Tracey Emin, distinguished critics from Britain and the United States explore her various artistic influences, for example Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele, and the separate parts of her oeuvre - her installations (most notably My Bed and Everyone I Have Ever Slept With), her film and video works, and her monoprints. The final essay takes the form of an interview with the artist.

Arnold Mindell: Dance of the Ancient One

Dance of the Ancient One

Description

Just as the earth is moved by the universe, you, me, every human, every life form, and every thing is moved by the universe as well. This movement feeling, the sense of the universe s gravity field or what Einstein called space time, is not just felt by astronauts. All of us feel moved by gravity all the time. When you let gravity move you, when you are moved by space time, you are moved by the universe. When you are moved in this way, you are showing the dance of the ancient one, and are in contact with the space between us, with the subtle experience of being moved by what I shall explain is a system mind possibly the most powerful system mind available to us. Arnold Mindell, The Dance of the Ancient One, Spring 2013 In his latest book, Mindell expands on his earlier concept of the processmind as he develops the notion of space time dreaming or dance of the ancient one in his rigorous efforts toward the elucidation of a ToE (or theory of everything). Space time dreaming weaves together essential spiritual concepts from the Eastern mystical tradition of the Tao and Wu Wei of Chinese philosophy, along with modern Western field and space theories in quantum physics such as gravity, space time, unified field theories, indeterminacy and entanglement. He draws upon personal field ideas (i.e., the unconscious), interpersonal social field and role theory from psychology and sociology, then adds concepts of intersubjectivity and entanglement from transpersonal and integral psychology. On a group level, he incorporates interdependence from organizational system mind models and places it all in the context of ecology, of Gaia, and then the larger universe. One World concepts, such as the Unus Mundus from mystical and alchemical traditions that work at a more essential or non-dual level to unite seeming opposites, facilitate the coming together of all of these varied perspectives in his framing of the space time dreaming concept, experientially accessible as The Dance of the Ancient One. Each chapter contains either an exercise to do in pairs or a small group, or an inner work exercise, so that you can facilitate yourself and experience the space time dreaming states directly. Transcripts of discussions with his students are distributed throughout the book, and engagingly contribute to a diverse and resonant learning experience.

Travelling with his beloved companion, Rose Tyler, the Doctor discovers a cache of weapons left behind after the Time War that destroyed his people. To his horror he finds they are being bought and sold on the black market! Worse, a new and mysterious force are policing time, making use of the power vacuum left by the Time Lords' disappearance to shape history to their own ends! In Counterpoint-for many years one of the most highly regarded texts in the field-the principles by which the contrapuntal element has operated in the works of composers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centures are presented. The counterpoint studied is the harmonic, rhythmic, instrumental style so well represented by the music of Bach. For it is this style that most of the composers who came after Bach, including those of our own time, have regarded as the ideal of contrapuntal technique. Piston's method in Counterpoint is to discover how music has been written rather than how it should be written. This book, in contrast to most traditional studies, states principles and gives rules that are based on actual observations of the practice of composers rather than those invented by the theorist. It offers examples drawn from the works of standard composers rather than those constructed by the author. The literature of the last three hundred years is examined to form the logical basis for this study. Throughout the book, exercises are provided that call for Nature Spirits: Wyrd Lore and Wild Fey Magic download book the writing of music and that are intended to clarify the principles under discussion.
